Prior to the start of the season, a criminal investigation was launched into the owners takeover of the club which ended with other SFL member clubs voting to offer Rangers a place in the 3rd Division for the start of the season.

Ally McCoist remained with the club as the majority of the first team left and the club promoted a number of youth prospects, mainly due to a 12 month transfer ban which prevented it from registering any players over 18.
