1991/92 season saw Sheffield United achieve a 9th place finish in the league, meaning the Blades would take part in the inaugural Premier League campaign the following year.

1992/93 saw a new era for English league football and Brian Deane scored the first ever Premier League goal in a 2–1 opening-day win over the eventual champions. The club also reached the FA Cup semi-finals but were beaten by their cross-city rivals. Manager Dave Bassett was awarded Manager of the Year.
